Reality Check

5/29/11

As a wedding photographer, a lot consumes my mind both running a business and being an artist that probably (no, definitely) shouldn’t. Your mind can be overwhelmed with lenses. gear. photoshop. albums. competition. clients. getting clients. do I have enough fans? (and not those fun little table fans either). Why does so and so edit that way? Why does so and so like that style? (WHY do I care is the real question!) I’ve been giving myself a few reality checks lately. Everytime I feel prideful, or judgemental, or jealous, or worried, I try to be…thankful for everything God has provided for me so far. Encouraging to new photographers. Helpful to whoever needs help. Honest about advice and tips. (And giving of the advice and tips even though I’ve had to make a million mistakes to learn from them and get to where I am today..) And when those things are hard to do, I give myself a major reality check. That even though my passion lies in photography, the ache in my heart and fulfillment in life is in Jesus and the work he wants me to do for his kingdom. Primarily in missions. Which is why this photo makes me cry and smile all at the same time. Guatemala opened my eyes and my mind. Only 5 months until I get to wrap my arms around the amazing little souls that shine God’s light despite the hardships they face. I can only hope to do the same in my life…

James 2:5 “Listen, my dear brothers: Has not God chosen those who are poor in the eyes of the world to be rich in faith and to inherit the kingdom he promised those who love him?”
