Father’s Day / Our Story

6/15/13

I’m sharing something rather personal today, but it is necessary in order to understand how deeply grateful I am – deeply grateful to my husband for being an amazing daddy. A daddy that my son would’ve never know had it not been for Christ weaving our lives together. A daddy that shows God’s love for us on a daily basis.

Back before I started walking with Christ, I was about as far away as one can get. Rebelling in every possible way I could, I ended up having my son Luca, with a man I knew he would never be able to call “daddy”.

So Luca and I began our lives together, my heart fully prepared to love him and be both the mommy and the daddy that he would need.

Or so I thought.

2 months after Luca was born, my sister Jana invited me to a bible study through Parkview Community Church. I told her I didn’t want to go, but shrugged and thought I had nothing better to do. My now husband was teaching that night. AnĀ atheist most of his life, he had just recently become a Christian a few years prior. Truth and apologetics was a huge step in his walk with God, and that happened to be what he was teaching on the night I came. I argued him for a good hour, questioning every thing he said. Then I left thinking, “I would never date that guy.”

Seriously.

I remember the first day that Jason (my husband) met Luca. We had gone out to eat at the Olive Garden with a group of friends from church, and Jason helped me carry him in. They locked eyes and Jason seemed almost immediately attached to him as I look back now. In fact, the picture below is the first time Jason held Luca. We weren’t even dating yet, but look at the love he already had for him:

Jason and I started dating when Luca turned 6 months, and Luca never went another day without a daddy. Jason and I knew the gift that God had given us in each other, and how much he saved us from, pulling us out of the hell that both of our previous lives were. We were deeply committed to submitting our relationship to Christ, and starting our lives as new creations in Him, just like the bible promises we are.

We celebrated our wedding day on June 11th, 2011, and our family became complete:

And gone were the days of fear I had harbored for so long. Fear that my son wouldn’t have the father he so deeply needed and deserved.

And they were replaced with the following:

A daddy to make popsicles with

A daddy to watch starwars and “zoobots” (robots) with

A daddy to wrestle with

A daddy to play monster with at the park

A daddy to make pancakes with

A daddy to hold his hand

A daddy to read with

A daddy to rub his head when he can’t fall asleep

A daddy who cries over how much he loves him

A daddy who kisses scrapes and bruises

A daddy who dances with him in the rain

A daddy who sets up forts

A daddy who builds castles in his room

A daddy who walks him to the candy store

A daddy who prays with him

A daddy who prays for him

A daddy who’s primary concern is that Luca knows God, our true heavenly father above ALL else

A daddy who is a gift, a blessing, and an example of God’s grace in my life

Happy Father’s Day Jason. We love you more than you will ever know.

**UPDATE: We are currently in the process of Jason adopting Luca, we are hoping that it will be finalized this summer, all prayers are appreciated and much needed!! :)

I never get tired of hearing your story I hear something new every time. I feel so honored that I have been able to share in just a very small portion of this story. You two are great examples for so many other hurting seeking young people. God is using you in a big way.

  3. Carissa says:

That is one of the most beautiful stories I’ve read. I am so happy you have such a wonderful daddy to your two little loves.

This is a beautiful post, and the pictures of your husband and son reflect such a deep love and bond. We have 5 biological sons and 1 adopted daughter and the moment my husband laid eyes on her he fell completely in love, and she adores her daddy. Fatherhood requires love, not DNA !

    P.s. I’m in Jana’s Bible study group!!

  7. Natalie says:

I’ve never heard the whole story, but I’m so glad you were both able to find each other & find God together and grow with God. You both are amazing people, Jason is an amazing daddy and a wonderful husband, God bless you both!

    Katie,
You and Jason are amazing! Your love for Christ and your family shows in everything you do! I am praying that all works out in yours and Jasons favor with the adoption.
